Hrm. Perhaps. But you have to remember - most of the time, you're the only one capable of stopping the beast you are fighting. If you aren't on a team, focus on what only you can do, to minimize the damage it can inflict. Saving people is also important - but you're almost never alone in having the ability to do that.
Mind, some people don't think to save themselves. That part isn't your problem per se, though.
